Portraits: Capturing Fleeting Impressions

My journey into the realm of portrait painting is relatively new, but it has definitely opened up a fascinating, untamed and raw dimension of inspiration. Let’s first start with the identity of these faces- a question I have often been asked by my viewers. Well, these faces I tend to paint are rarely direct representations of real people. Instead, these are visual composites, rather fleeting glimpses of individuals I have encountered or I “think” I have encountered.

Yes, “think” is the focal point here. You see, my memories resurface in varied forms. Sometimes I might recall a snapshot of someone’s subtle smile while other times, I might recall a person’s weary eyes. These glimpses leave scattered impressions, fragments of human presence that I try to recreate on a blank canvas. This process is very interpretative and intuitive. These portraits capture passing moments of human connection I may have experienced at some point, subtle expressions I have witnessed, and nuanced emotions that may have been overlooked or even disregarded. Each of my portraits reflects the raw beauty found in these fleeting glimpses as I urge my viewers to look beyond the surface.

While growing up in the lively city of Dhaka, I was constantly surrounded by a diverse tapestry of human interactions. The bustling streets were filled with unique faces, each with a story to tell. From the busy markets to the narrow alleys, these scenes left a lasting impression on me. The range of emotions and expressions I have witnessed during my early years laid the foundation for my interest in portraiture. These experiences taught me to observe the wide spectrum of human emotions and the fleeting nature of our connections with others. When I moved to the West, I encountered a different cultural landscape. The faces in these cities carried a different set of stories, they whispered histories different to that of mine. A whole new plethora of stories that were dying to be extricated in my mind.

In my portraits, I try to capture the universal nature of emotions while trying to honour the unique characteristics of the individuals I paint. The people I depict are a fusion of those I have encountered in both the South and the West. As I paint, I let my memories guide me, allowing the faces to emerge organically on the canvas. This fluid, interpretative approach fuses my portraits with a sense of wild and raw emotion. Through these paintings, I urge my viewers to look beyond the surface and engage with the deeper stories each face holds. These paintings are a celebration of the fleeting, often overlooked moments that define our interactions with others. They are a reminder of the richness and complexity of human experience, urging us to see the beauty in the ordinary and the temporary.
