As an artist, my creative approach combines not only actual experiences but also visionary aspirations. I grew up in Bangladesh, surrounded by South Asia’s rich cultural legacy. I truly believe this has inherently and profoundly influenced my artistic journey. Today, my artwork primarily concentrates on landscapes, and I’ve only recently begun experimenting with portraits. Each genre provides a unique source of inspiration, yet they are all connected by my foolish desire to find beauty in the everyday and mundane. Welcome to another chapter of “Bedlam Muses,” a blog series by Strokes of Chaos in which I will take you on a journey through the South.
Landscapes: Beyond Horizons
The first stop today is the imagined landscapes which I so dearly depict in my paintings. Growing up in Bangladesh, I was surrounded by one of the most magnificent ambience of the South, ranging from stunning vegetation in rural areas to the dynamic rush of the city life. When I create landscapes, I often paint them from strong memories of places I have either already visited or may have seen in the passing. These aren’t just visual memories, but emotional imprints that capture the spirit of those moments. These memories occasionally go beyond the bounds of reality. They appear in my visions as abstract fleeting images. They allow me to explore beyond the tangible world, a mystified realm where my fabled mind takes control. Thus the next time you flick through my paintings, remind yourself that you are actually taking a journey through my memory, reflecting the fleeting beauty of both actual and imagined locales.
For the majority of my early years, I have lived and experienced the bustling city of Dhaka where I was exposed to the sights and noises of a busy metropolitan life. I observed the tiny alleyways crammed with rickshaws, experienced the cacophony of market vendors, and lived through the vibrant colours in the busy bazaars. Needless to say that these experiences have all left an indelible mark on my creative mind. However, amidst this commotion, I frequently found myself yearning for the quiet serenity of the countryside. I recall the infrequent visits to my grandparents’ village- some of the most valued and cherished memories I hold. I vividly recall the broad, open paddy fields stretching to the horizon, the quiet rivers reflecting the golden casts of the sunset sun, and the slow, unhurried pace of country life. I guess, these short moments of quiet and natural beauty sowed the seeds of my passion for landscapes.
I often find myself returning to these fond memories for my artistic muse. The rural landscapes I paint are frequently idealised images of the countryside I wished for as a child. If you observe, you will notice, that the verdant terraces, the towering trees, and meandering rivers are recurring subjects in my work, depicting the lovely countryside I used to picture from my city apartment.
Interestingly enough, as my artistic journey continues to progress, my landscapes now reflect a European aesthetic. Today, my paintings frequently feature scenes from the Western countryside, from the rolling green hills to the small villages with cobbled streets, from the deep forests to the massive mountains. This shift in my artistic style is not the result of an abandonment of my roots, but rather of a common need for nature’s peace and beauty. The feelings driving these scenes are the same: a sincere desire to return to the roots, the trees, the muddy dirt roads, the empty streets, and the breathtaking mountains. This exploration of life from a Western viewpoint allows me to combine childhood dreams with fresh inspirations. The cultural aspects may be different, but the essence is unchanged. Each landscape, whether influenced by the South or the West, tells a tale of a heart seeking peace in nature and a spirit discovering beauty in the ordinary and prosaic.
Through my art, I hope to bridge the gap between the concrete and the abstract, the real and the imagined. My landscapes are more than just physical portrayals; they convey the longing and dreams of a city person yearning for the tranquillity of the rural. They showcase the power of memory and imagination, capturing the beauty of places both seen and unseen.
